Lake Sakakawea and Lake Oahe are both still producing some good walleye fishing. We have had boats on Sakakawea consistently for the past few weeks with easy limits for the most part as long as the weather cooperates. If a cold front or some nasty wind blows in it makes it a tough but other than that the fishing is definitely good. We have been catching all our fish in spinners and slow death on the big lake anywhere from 15 to 40 feet of water. I know this doesn’t help much but this time of year the fish really move around and finding the depth is the hardest part for sure. It doesn’t seem to matter what area of the lake you fish it seems to be the same story all over.
Lake Oahe in North Dakota is a little different story, we haven’t been down there as much but when we have it has been good. I plan on spending some more time on this body of water in the weeks to come. Most fish we are catching on Lake Oahe are coming on crankbaits in the 15 to 20 foot range. Livebait rigs work as well but with the cranks a person can cover a lot more water and find the fish a little faster. I have been using Berkley flickershads and flicker minnows for the most part, it is hard to beat these baits on Oahe.
The fish are still looking really healthy in both bodies of water right now which makes the future of these waters really bright. We are in the Dog Days right now and the fishing is still good so I can only imagine how good the Walleye Fishing will be this fall.
